This is one of the most beautiful Confederate artifacts you will ever get the chance to own! It is an original Confederate staff & field officer’s coat with the original trousers.
This is the pattern that was worn by the well-to-do Southern officers during the Civil War. This one has the original quatrefoil on the sleeves that is made of the three separate braids that denote the rank of Colonel.
This piece is surely privately made by a well trained tailor. It is entirely hand stitched from top to bottom. The front of the coat has the two rows of buttons which is referred to by collectors as being a “Double breasted frock coat”. The coat has 16 original coat buttons and six original cuff buttons. These buttons have the beautiful script style “I” which denotes the infantry branch of Confederate service. The backmark on the reverse of the coat buttons is of the famous firm of Isaac Campbell & Company. They were located in England and sold uniform buttons that were ran through the blockage for sale to Confederates for use on uniform coats. These are the officer version since they are gold gilded instead of just being polished brass like the enlistedman’s versions. The cuff buttons are extremely tough to find and desirable and they all have the Treble Rich backmark.
When we acquired the coat the ancient thread was separating along some of the seams and we have had it professionally restored for display and preservation. As you can see it is simply breathtaking when displayed on a mannequin.
One thing that separates this piece from almost all of the other coats out there is that it is accompanied by the original trousers. If you read in the North South trader Price Guide they state that there are reportedly less than 200 authentic Confederate Uniforms in private hands. Of those I would estimate that less than 20% of those are accompanied by the original trousers.
The trousers are an exact match for the construction and you can tell by the colors and weave that they came from the same bolt of cloth. They are in superb shape all over and even have all of the buttons intact as well as the size adjuster on the reverse. Inside the lower leg of the pants it has the boot guard intact as well.
There is no name on the coat or pants so we don’t know who he was.
We had renowned Uniform authority Les Jensen and his report will accompany the uniform.
According to Mr. Jensen this uniform was made by the Memphis, Tennessee tailor William Poole. Before this coat was discovered there were only four known Confederate tailor’s uniforms. This one made the 5th. He did the identification by the tailor’s mark on one of the trouser’s buttons. He states that the coat would have been made from about January to June of 1862.
You will have an extremely hard time finding a better looking Confederate colonel’s frock coat and this one has the trousers as well.
This is the opportunity of a lifetime and it is priced according with today’s economy. It is the kind of thing you will likely say 20 years from now “Man I’m glad I bought that one!”
